Will you pay road tax for an electric car in 2026?

Yes. Up to and including 2024, fully electric cars (EVs) were completely exempt from road tax. From January 1, 2025 , you pay a reduced rate of 25% of the standard motor vehicle tax (MRB) . Also read our page about road tax in general.

In brief:

  • Fully electric cars will pay in 2025 25% of the regular MRB rate.
  • Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are subject to separate rules.
  • The discount will apply until at least the end of 2026.

How much will road tax cost for an electric car in 2026?

The amount of road tax depends on:

  1. The program weight of the car,
  2. De provincial surcharges (the surcharge per province).

Electric cars are often slightly heavier due to their battery pack, but thanks to the low rate, the difference remains limited.
