Sources in The Hague report that the government is considering lowering the speed limit on highways to 100 kilometers per hour. Currently, the speed limit is 120 or 130 kilometers per hour between 19:00 PM and 06:00 AM, but that may be coming to an end.

It's still under consideration by the cabinet, but there's a good chance it will pass. It's certainly a simple measure to reduce CO2 emissions in the short term. 

More measures against CO2 emissions?

The current government's coalition agreement stipulates that the speed limit will not be changed, but given the need to reduce CO2 emissions, this may no longer be possible. And because coal-fired power plants are now working longer hours again, more measures may well be on the horizon. All official plans will be announced on Budget Day, September 20th of this year. Or perhaps they'll leak out a few days earlier.
