The decision has been made. The European Parliament has approved the ban on the production of gasoline and diesel cars from 2035 onward. Start saving for your new EV or hydrogen car. It's worth noting that existing fossil fuel cars will be allowed to continue running.  

The European Parliament didn't discuss a ban on combustion engines, but it did propose a ban on CO2 emissions from cars. Ultimately, this means the same thing, meaning the production of diesel and gasoline engines will cease by 2035. Cars running on synthetic fuels will also no longer be permitted.

CO2-neutral fuels

So-called eFuels, synthetic fuels, do emit CO2, but are also CO2-neutral. They are made with CO2 captured from the air. Vehicles using these synthetic fuels then emit the CO2 again. And even though they don't add any additional CO2, they do emit CO2. And so they are banned. This is expected to lead to some tug-of-war with the automotive lobby over the next 13 years.
